We all have a travel bucket list, whether it’s carefully written down or simply stored away in our minds. Some destinations, though, are truly unforgettable—experiences that stay with us forever. South Africa is one of those destinations.
Arrive in the vibrant, historical city of Cape Town, where the scenic coastlines and majestic mountain ranges await you. By the time you land, it’ll likely be evening, so it’s the perfect moment to settle in and adjust. The Cape Grace Hotel is an ideal retreat with luxurious rooms and family suites right on the harbor.
Start your day with a tour of Cape Town, then head up Table Mountain by cable car. This famous flat-top peak offers a full panorama of the Cape Peninsula, and each viewpoint reveals a different, breathtaking perspective. Later, stroll the Victoria and Albert Watershed to browse local artisan goods—think jewelry, ceramics, and textiles.
Cape Point is where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans converge. Take a scenic walk to the lighthouse for mesmerizing views, and afterwards, visit Boulders Beach, home to a growing colony of African penguins. With just two breeding pairs in 1982, this colony now boasts over 2,200 penguins—a sight you’ll never forget.
A short 45-minute drive from Cape Town brings you to Franschhoek, a valley known for its vineyards and French charm. Settled by French Huguenots in the 1680s, this area produces wines from Champagne to Shiraz. Spend the night at La Cotte Inn with its spectacular gardens, or dive into adventure nearby with shark diving, sandboarding, or whale watching.
Say goodbye to the wine country and Cape Town when you board a flight to Kruger National Park, where Africa’s iconic “Big Five”—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo—await. Choose from luxurious private reserves or stay within the national park, where you’ll enjoy twice-daily safaris in open Jeeps. Don’t forget to look out for giraffes, a true delight on any safari adventure. Here, you can also embark on walking safaris or even dine high in a treehouse.
After such a long flight to South Africa why stop there? Head to Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi River divides Zambia and Zimbabwe. Both sides offer excellent accommodations and incredible cuisine. Spend your days on river cruises spotting hippos, enjoy high tea overlooking antelope at a watering hole, and take a guided tour of the falls. For thrill-seekers, try swimming at Devil’s Pool or take a helicopter ride over the falls. I recommend 3-5 nights to experience to get it all in.
It is time to say goodbye to Victoria Falls and decide: head home or continue the adventure? There are many options. Head back into South Africa where Johannesburg offers an enriching cultural experience. For beach lovers, Mozambique’s pristine coast is just a short flight away.
